They were teachers—that is how they regarded themselves. In the process of serving as teachers, they performed judicial, administrative, and political functions. In the latter half of the 20th century, panoramic radiography provided for visualization of the entire maxillomandibular dentition and surrounding facial structures on a single image. Regardless of the advance in imaging science that panoramic radiography represented, it is still a 2-dimensional (2D) technology and fraught with the limitations of all 2D images; namely, magnification, distortion, superimposition, and the loss of spatial dimensional information as real 3-dimensional (3D) anatomy is collapsed onto a 2D image. Introduced to the US market in 2000, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) represents a paradigm shift to true 3D imaging.</description><dc:title>The Evolving Dynamic in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology</dc:title><dc:creator>Laurie C. In the case of implant planning, which was among the first applications of this technology, the exact 3D location of the implant could be preplanned and even guided during surgery. This was a major advancement in implant planning above and beyond traditional radiographic images, such as panoramic, bitewing, and periapical films, all of which are subject to magnification errors and dimensional distortion. However, with CBCT imaging, the images are captured in their true anatomic size and shape, and therefore offer the most accurate treatment planning potential. For these reasons, CBCT imaging was quickly harnessed for multiple imaging applications in various fields of dentistry, from diagnostics to surgical planning, and from orthodontics to endodontics; it has permeated all fields of our profession. The scope of this article will highlight the salient features of how CBCT imaging is being used for orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic applications.</description><dc:title>3D Cephalometrics: The New Norm</dc:title><dc:creator>Douglas L. Although conventional or medical computed tomography (CT) had been available since the 1970s, with few exceptions, it had not been widely used in dentistry. In the early days of conventional CT, the machines were limited in number, restricting their use to only the most beneficial of purposes—for example, imaging of the brain. The cost of a CT examination was also prohibitive. For these reasons, the modality in dentistry was used almost exclusively in oral and maxillofacial surgery and sparingly at that. Even as the limitations of access and cost disappeared, the cost–benefit ratio when the x-ray dose was compared in relation to the information to be gained was generally considered to be unfavorable for the use of CT scans in most dental applications.</description><dc:title>Conebeam Computed Tomography: Legal Considerations</dc:title><dc:creator>Bernard Friedland</dc:creator><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.aodf.2010.03.008</dc:identifier><dc:source>Alpha Omegan 103, 2 (2010)</dc:source><dc:date>2010-06-01</dc:date><prism:publicationName>Alpha Omegan</prism:publicationName><prism:publicationDate>2010-06-01</prism:publicationDate><prism:volume>103</prism:volume><prism:number>2</prism:number><prism:issueIdentifier>S0002-6417(10)X0003-3</prism:issueIdentifier><prism:section>Scientific Articles</prism:section><prism:startingPage>57</prism:startingPage><prism:endingPage>61</prism:endingPage></item><item rdf:about="http://www.alphaomeganjournal.org/article/PIIS0002641710000928/abstract?rss=yes"><title>Essentials of Maxillofacial Cone Beam Computed Tomography</title><link>http://www.alphaomeganjournal.org/article/PIIS0002641710000928/abstract?rss=yes</link><description>Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a diagnostic imaging modality that has shown rapid adoption in clinical dental practice over the past 10 years. CBCT images provide high quality, accurate 3-dimensional (3D) representations of the osseous elements of the maxillofacial skeleton. The purpose of this article is to provide (1) an introduction to maxillofacial CBCT technology, (2) an understanding of the relative patient radiation dose, and (3) to underline the appropriate use of CBCT as a diagnostic imaging modality with specific clinical applications.</description><dc:title>Essentials of Maxillofacial Cone Beam Computed Tomography</dc:title><dc:creator>William C. While the TADMOR committee has already concluded that the State of Israel needs two dental schools, the final decision regarding the structure, size, and budget of the school is still in the hands of the highest possible authorities of the Ministry of Education. I am certain that by the time this message will appear in print, the conclusions will be released, and I hope that we shall all have reasons to be much more optimistic. At this time, the faculty has decided to protest and go on strike starting May 1, 2010, if no solution will be found by that time. Let us hope that this will never happen, and that by the end of April I shall be able to share with you that students' admission for the next academic year has begun.</description><dc:title>From the Dean's Desk – Tel Aviv University</dc:title><dc:creator>Haim Tal</dc:creator><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.aodf.2010.04.002</dc:identifier><dc:source>Alpha Omegan 103, 2 (2010)</dc:source><dc:date>2010-06-01</dc:date><prism:publicationName>Alpha Omegan</prism:publicationName><prism:publicationDate>2010-06-01</prism:publicationDate><prism:volume>103</prism:volume><prism:number>2</prism:number><prism:issueIdentifier>S0002-6417(10)X0003-3</prism:issueIdentifier><prism:section>From the Dean's Desk-Tel Aviv University</prism:section><prism:startingPage>81</prism:startingPage><prism:endingPage>81</prism:endingPage></item><item rdf:about="http://www.alphaomeganjournal.org/article/PIIS0002641710000837/abstract?rss=yes"><title>Golden and Platinum Tributes</title><link>http://www.alphaomeganjournal.org/article/PIIS0002641710000837/abstract?rss=yes</link><description>Nanette Cutler—Wishing you a speedy recoveryHoward and Eileen Kessner Ralph Rothstein for a continued healthy recoveryMarvin and Fran Sonne</description><dc:title>Golden and Platinum Tributes</dc:title><dc:creator></dc:creator><dc:identifier>10.1016/j.aodf.2010.03.002</dc:identifier><dc:source>Alpha Omegan 103, 2 (2010)</dc:source><dc:date>2010-06-01</dc:date><prism:publicationName>Alpha Omegan</prism:publicationName><prism:publicationDate>2010-06-01</prism:publicationDate><prism:volume>103</prism:volume><prism:number>2</prism:number><prism:issueIdentifier>S0002-6417(10)X0003-3</prism:issueIdentifier><prism:section>Golden and Platinum Tributes</prism:section><prism:startingPage>82</prism:startingPage><prism:endingPage>82</prism:endingPage></item><item rdf:about="http://www.alphaomeganjournal.org/article/PIIS0002641710000849/abstract?rss=yes"><title>In Memoriam</title><link>http://www.alphaomeganjournal.org/article/PIIS0002641710000849/abstract?rss=yes</link><description>At this time, we acknowledge the passing of the following fraters.
